Idaho’s Birthday Special | Roy Buckley on 93 Years of Idaho History, Ranching, Firearms & the Sawtooths

On Idaho’s birthday, The Great Idaho Show sits down with a true Idaho legend.
Roy Buckley has spent 93 years living Idaho life. Born near Marsing in 1933, Roy shares stories from a childhood shaped by farming, ranching, horses, haying, hunting, and hard work during some of Idaho’s most defining years.
From running horse teams at six years old to hunting pheasants with a converted 1863 Springfield shotgun, Roy offers a rare firsthand look at a version of Idaho that few people today can fully imagine.
Roy also spent decades with the U.S. Forest Service helping shape some of the roads and trail systems that Idahoans still enjoy today. His work helped develop and improve access throughout Lowman, Garden Valley, the Boise National Forest, and the Sawtooth Wilderness, including iconic trail systems near Sawtooth Lake and Grandjean.
This conversation explores:
• Early ranch life in Marsing
• Idaho hunting and firearms culture
• Working in the Forest Service
• Building roads and trails across Idaho
• Stories from Lowman, Garden Valley, and the Sawtooths
• Idaho values and preserving Idaho history
This is more than an interview. It is a living record of Idaho history through the eyes of a man who helped build and preserve it.
